Carlisle United may turn to one of their struggling League One rivals to improve their scoring record.
It has been reported that the Blues are interested in Fleetwood forward Jack Marriott.
Bottom of the table Fleetwood are nine points from safety – two more than Carlisle – and are said to be planning to let some big earners go before the end of the January transfer window.
One of these is Marriott, said to be one of the highest earners in the Division – which may affect any move as he is under contract until the summer of 2025.
Carlisle are said to have rivals for Marriott’s signature in Bristol Rovers, and significantly both clubs appear to have been thwarted in efforts to sign their main targets.
Rovers wanted Peterborough’s Jonson Clarke-Harris but after a deal fell through before the pre-season deadline they are said to be waiting until he becomes a free agent in the summer.
Carlisle were interested in Bradford City’s Jake Young but understandably baulked at the price tag quoted by the Bantams, said by some sources to be as high as £500,000.
Marriott had a brief four match stay on loan from Ipswich at Carlisle in 2014 and his career really started to take off at Luton in League Two from 2015/2017 when he scored 22 times in 79 appearances.
Two spells at Peterborough (40 goals in 93 games) and Derby (10 in 69) preceded his move to Fleetwood last season and he has netted 13 times in 32 appearances.
