Football clubs looking to get back into action this weekend

Cumbria’s leading non-league clubs are looking to get back into action tomorrow after several postponements last week.

Workington were able to play their Northern Premier League game at home to Warrington Rylands and for the second home game in a row gave away a 2-0 lead to finish all square.

The Reds are back at Borough Park with a visit from Whitby Town after the corresponding fixture at the Yorkshire club ended in a draw.

Manager Danny Grainger should have skipper Conor Tinnion ready to resume while defender Aidy Roxburgh should also be ready for a return to the bench after several weeks out through injury.

Striker Lewis Reilly, who has been sidelined for most of the season with ankle ligament damage, joined the pre-match warm-up last week and is expected to be back playing next month.

On the eve of the game Whitby announced that striker Connor Simpson has left the club by mutual consent.

Simpson joined the club little over a year ago and has gone on to make 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven times.

However, with plans to emigrate in the months ahead, it has been agreed that Simpson will depart the Seasiders with immediate effect.

A club statement said: “With a required operation planned in the near future, all parties felt it made sense to mutually agree to an early contract termination.

‘Simmo’ will always be fondly remembered for his final goal in a Whitby Town shirt – his outstanding goal in the Emirates FA Cup at Bristol Rovers in November.”

Whitby lie eighth in the Premier Division table with 38 points, six outside the play-offs and five more than Workington who lie 13th.

Carlisle City did not play last Saturday or in mid-week but hope to resume their Northern League campaign tomorrow at Seaham Red Star. City lie eighth but within striking distance of the top five play off berth while their hosts are fourth bottom.

Penrith had a superb 3-2 home win over Shildon last Saturday but lost Tuesday night’s game with Whickham because of the storm.

Theyb have another Frenchfield date tomorrow against Crook Town who are going well at the moment and are two points and three places better off than the Cumbrians – and from four fewer games.

But Darren Edmondson’s side are on a great winning run at home which has helped them put relegation fears well behind them as they are up to 13th.

It’s been a traumatic few days for Kendal Town – players, officials and supporters – as their trip to the Isle of Man ended in an enforced stay on the island.

They will try to put that behind them tomorrow at home to third-places Wythenshawe and regain a place in the play-off berths after slipping to sixth.

In the Wearside League Windscale visit Shotton Colliery in the second round of the Monkwearmouth Cup.

The Egremont side has already earned a place, for the second year in a row, in the Alan Hood Trophy final and are going well in the League, lying fifth six points behind the leaders. Shotton Colliery are 13th in the table 11 points behind the Cumbrians.

Whitehaven had their trip to Turton in the West Lancashire League aborted last week because of a frozen pitch and they are back home tomorrow against Tempest United.

It’s 11th v 13th but Tempest are only three points behind the Cumbrians but do have five games in hand.

Cleator Moor Celtic are on a losing run of three games and face a tricky trip to Burscough Richmond who are currently fourth in the table, four points and four places better off than their west Cumbrian visitors – but from six less games.
