Season three of Carlisle’s Thursday Night Billiards League got underway with four games taking place.
New players are joining the handicapped one-hour timed version of billiards and the League has rapidly grown to 20 players, becoming very popular in Qzone on a Thursday night.
The first game was between Ian Cleminson and Neil Walby. Neil always brings a strong potting game to the table and he scored strongly in patches and in one phase he scored 16 , 19 and then 17 in three visits, while Ian just missed so a throw of 50 points quickly kicked in!
Neil did well last season, coming third and he started this season with a 355 to 290 win while Ian was agonisingly short of the 300 point bonus target.
Dave Midgely refereed the game between newcomer Peter Dean and Michael Waring. Michael works hard at his cueing technique and with some classy potting and some crafty safety play he beat Peter by 344 to 270.
Peter was very close with some good efforts and looks sure to enjoy some better running in the weeks to come.
On the next table two of the League’s strongest players Paul Cowing and Nigel Lewthwaite faced off against each other.
Peter Stanyer kindly stepped up to ref as Paul registered the nights highest break with 55. He also added a 27 and won the match 273-197.
In the final match of the evening, last season’s champion Mike Griffiths faced John Metcalfe. Mike is heading up to play in the World Billiards Scottish Open this week-end and this match was a good chance to get in some match practice.
Mike had a good break of 44 and a few around the 20 mark. John scored steadily thoughout in response and managed to come out on top by 328 to 305.
All matches are played on a Thursday night in Qzone between 7pm and 9pm, and if anyone is interested in coming along to see how the game is played they will be made most welcome.
