Workington Reds may be losing their senior women’s team next season, but they are already looking ahead to the next generation.
The club will be entering teams in the Cumberland FA Summer Leagues for ladies and girls.
That will be the catalyst for plans to return to the regional pyramid via the Lancashire League.
Reds director Simon Collins said: “There has never been a better time to be a female footballer in West Cumbria. There are so many choices at the moment and now there is a fresh new option on the table for them to consider.
“Workington AFC Ladies and Girls are throwing an open invitation to train in advance of entering the Cumberland FA Summer League before embarking on a plan to return to the regional pyramid via the Lancashire League.
“A completely blank canvas gives players an equal opportunity to forge a pathway in the senior game with the backing of the county’s top Semi Professional club.

“There are all kinds of potential recruits – just turned 16 and eager to get started, disillusioned with lack of game time elsewhere, returning to the game after a break or simply just fancy a new challenge.
“We have a Level 2 qualified coach in Brian Heywood who has previous experience of the Ladies pyramid. Indeed he is recognised as having previously made a significant involvement in guiding the existing Reds Ladies team to their current League status.”
Reds plans weekly training sessions alongside the club’s highly popular Girls Academy with six weeks of pre-season training free of charge.
Collins added: “We have a vastly experienced admin and safeguarding team and there will be weekly mid-week summer fixtures for starters.
“There will be Playing/ Training Kit and Travel wear; Social Media and YouTube coverage all within a nationally recognised and highly respected football brand.”
Sessions start on Wednesday February 21 and potential new recruits should call or message 07703 019285 for an informal chat or to express an interest, email [email protected]
