Workington man accused of owning dog which “caused injury and death” of 90-year-old neighbour

A man has appeared in court accused of owning a Patterdale terrier which is said to have injured his 90-year-old neighbour while out of control, resulting in the pensioner’s death.

Martin Hawley, 58, faces one charge.

This alleges that Hawley was the owner of a Patterdale terrier called Annie which was dangerously out of control at Warwick Place in Workington; and that, whilst the dog was allegedly out of control, it injured Joseph James, resulting in his death.

The charge arises out of an incident which is said to have occurred on the residential road in Workington town centre on October 21, 2022.

Hawley appeared in front of a district judge, John McGarva, at Workington magistrates’ court this morning when he spoke to confirm his personal details.

During a short hearing Hawley — who was represented by solicitor John Cooper — entered no plea to the allegation he faces.

The case was sent to Carlisle Crown Court. Hawley, of Warwick Place, Workington, is due to appear there in front of a judge on Monday, March 11.

In the meantime he has been granted unconditional bail.
