Workington Golf Club A maintained their Division One lead in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League.
They had to dig deep for a hard fought 3-2 win at the Division Two’s top side, Workington Veterans Club A.
A solid start for Mark Brasted gave the Golf Club A cueist the foundation he needed to put his side 1-0 up but with breaks of 41 and 31 Kevin Basnett quickly negated this as the Vets A captain made it 1-1.
The ever-reliable Bryan Walker delivered his usual in frame three to ensure the Golf A outfit moved in front at 2-1, however back came the Vets A side again with superb display from Mark Tatton to make it 2-2.
In the final frame of the match the Vets A side looked to be on the verge of an upset but with a determined Mark Cowen having other ideas the Golf A potter nicked the frame and match on the last couple of balls.
Workington’s United Club A defeated fellow Division One side Workington Conservative Club 4-1 at home and are just three points behind leaders Workington Golf Club A with a game in hand so the title looks to be going down to the wire.
Dave Chapman put the United A side 1-0 up with a low-scoring victory in the first, however a re-spotted black ball win in the second for Cons’ Richard McCarthy was enough to draw level at 1-1.
A break of 32 for Peter O’Hagan in the third proved to be the catalyst for a United A 2-1 advantage and as team mate, and captain, Andrew Mitchelhill won the fourth the lead was stretched to 3-1.
In the final frame of the match Mark Suitor used his tactical knowledge to outwit his opponent, and with a victory to follow as a result the United A side ended the game with a extremely satisfying four point haul.
Division One’s Flimby Social hung on to their title winning chances on the back of a 4-1 victory at Division Two’s Maryport Social.
Kevin Kirkham came on strong at the end of frame one to put Flimby 1-0 up and with Paul Vickers winning in similar vein in the second, the Division One side led 2-0.
Frame three saw Andrew Scott offer some Maryport resistance to make it 2-1 but with Richard Kirkham studiously producing a frame winning break of 31 in frame four Flimby moved 3-1 ahead.
Mid way through frame five it all seemed finely balanced, but as Gary Miller fell foul to the three miss rule it was Sal Cakmak who won the frame and match by default to increase Flimby’s winning margin to 4-1.
Workington’s United Club B closed the gap to ten points on Division Two leaders Vets Club A with a 5-0 whitewash of fellow second tier outfit Workington Golf Club B.
A thumping away win saw Stephen Harrison and Andrew Carter put the United B side 2-0 up. A solid win for Stephen Jackson made it 3-0 and even though Adam Sowden scored just 41 points in frame four it was enough to take the match score to 4-0.
Frame five gave the Golf B side some hope of a point as the frame went to a re-spotted black, however as the black went down Jamie Flitton recorded another United B victory to add further misery to the golfers’ woes.
Finally, Division One’s Station Road Club saw a 2-0 home advantage turn into a nervy decider as Whitehaven’s Rack Shack came back at them to level at 2-2. But with coolness under pressure it was the Workington outfit who eventually presided 3-2.
Wins for Darren Lawson and Mark Robertson got Station Road out of the blocks quickly but not to be deterred Phil Denvir and Neil Dougherty soon levelled for the Rack Shack at 2-2.
The last frame of the match saw nerve ends jangling, however staying cool under pressure Tom Thompson guided Station Road to victory with a win on the last couple of balls to snatch the match win.
