Workington’s new manager Mark Fell has made his first two signings for the club – key members of his backroom staff.
Fell, who was confirmed as the new manager last night, has brought in Graham Lancashire and Craig Rutherford who both worked with him in his last role as Lancaster City manager.
Reds vice chairman Richard Lewthwaite said: “We have left that up to Mark to bring in who he wants on the bench as assistants, and it will be part of his overall budget. I think he will also be speaking to members of the current back-room staff.”
Fell has watched Reds play once, in the home game against Hyde United and will be watching the team play in all, or most, of their remaining six NPL Premier Division games.
Lewthwaite added: “Mark and ourselves are very aware that he doesn’t want to interfere with Danny’s leadership. We are all wanting Danny to go out on a high at the club because he deserves to for what he has achieved for Workington Reds.
“What Mark does will be very much in the background, assessing the playing squad etc for when he does assume control after Danny has completed his duties at the end of April.”
Fell’s number two, Lancashire, now 51, started his playing career with Burnley in 1989, playing 31 League games (eight goals) with loan spells at Halifax and Chester (seven goals in 11 games).
He joined Preston North End in 1994 and played 23 times, also spending time with Wigan Athletic on loan before completing his League career with Rochdale (23 goals in 83 games).
Rutherford played his football with Dalton United and Holker Old Boys before acting as manager for Barrow’s Under-21s side which won a League title in 2018/19.
He was subsequently invited to join Ian Evatt’s first team coaching staff and was involved when Barrow were promoted from the National League to League Two.
