Plans to change roads in Lake District town

Proposals to make a series of changes to roads in Windermere ahead of a major development have been revealed.

Urban Splash Developments Limited has submitted a scoping report to the Lake District National Park Authority to determine if an environmental impact assessment is necessary for the construction of a raft of road improvements on the A591 and Thwaites Lane.

The proposed work is needed for the Orrest Head Farm development.

In the Local Plan, the 9.05 hectare site is available for 150 homes, 1,200sq m of employment space and 3,800sq m of tourism-related uses.

Planning documents said: “The delivery of the highways infrastructure represents an important phase in unlocking the site and facilitating the wider mixed-use development allocation in the Local Plan.

“The highways infrastructure improvements are being brought forward with the benefit of funding secured through the Housing Infrastructure Fund, a Government capital grant programme to secure the delivery of much-needed housing.”

The proposed development is anticipated to comprise of improvements to the A591 to introduce an extension to the Windermere gateway, the introduction of new junction off the A591 into the Orrest Head Farm site and an improved junction between A591 and Thwaites Lane.

Other anticipated proposals include the addition of shared path between Orrest Head Farm and Windermere Station, the introduction of new junction off Thwaites Lane into the Orrest Head Farm site as well as the implementation of sustainable drainage to improve surface water run-off quality and improve flooding issues related to Thwaites Lane.

If the authority identifies significant environmental effects, an impact assessment is necessary.

Urban Splash Developments held a public consultation about initial plans for Orrest Head Farm as part of the Windermere Gateway Project on March 5.

The initial consultation focused on proposed highways improvements including the creation of a new pedestrian route, enhanced cycle connections, and enhancements to the A591 and Thwaites Lane.
