Girls’ football is on the rise across the country, and Cumbria has also had an increase in the number of young female participants.
Cumbria Crack’s Elwyn Evans went along to watch Cleator Moor Celtic against Bransty at Under-11s level.
Celtic coach Gareth Evans said the match was an opportunity to see how changes to the team would affect them losing a couple of over age players, and how the newcomers would shape up.
He said: “They played well, passing the ball nicely and working as a team. They scored some good goals. Bransty girls gave them a good game, scoring some nicely taken goals themselves. It was a good workout for both teams.”
Elwyn also dropped in on an Under-8s boys game between Celtic and Workington Greys.
He said: “Both teams played some nice football for ones so young. I’m sure both teams will do well this season.
“Both have been moved-up into the Under-9s League, so it will be a test for them both.”
