Two members of Carlisle rugby union club’s youth section are getting set for a series of rugby league internationals.
Rory Irving and Alfie Jackson have been selected for Scotland in the Four Nations series at Under-16s level.
Both are back-row forwards for Carlisle’s Under-15s squad which lost to Kendal by a point in the semi-finals of the County Cup in the season just ended.
Although they will not be involved this Saturday, when Scotland entertain England at Cambuslang, the pair will feature in the other two internationals against Wales at Chester and then in Glasgow against Ireland.
The two Carlisle lads are also members of the Newcastle Falcons Development squad and that was where they were spotted for rugby league selection.
From the Falcons training camp they were invited to a Scottish rugby league trial and were selected from there.
Rory was actually born in Scotland while Alfie has a Scottish grandmother.
With Carlisle Under-15s Alfie was voted Players’ Player of the Year for last season while Rory was the regular team captain.
Two West Cumbrians – Danny Riley (Wath Brow) and Liam Bourhill (Kells) are also included in the Scotland squad.
There are six Cumbrians in the England squad for the internationals – Ellis Holliday, Bobby Dickinson and Josh Doran (all Hensingham); Jayden Tyson and Dylan Morris (both Egremont) and Jack Barker (Millom).
