A Cumbrian vicar has spoken of his privilege in helping officiate at Dave Day, an event in memory of Hairy Biker Dave Myers.

Around 20,000 bikers descended on Barrow on Saturday to pay tribute to the TV chef who died, aged 66, in February after a cancer diagnosis two years ago.

The huge procession of bikes set off from London on Saturday morning and was led by Dave’s TV sidekick and best friend, Si King.

Once in Barrow they gathered outside the town hall to hear from Dave’s friends and family as well as the Rev Tony Ford, the vicar of St Mark’s Barrow.

Tony had been contacted by Dave’s widow, Liliana, and provided a 10-minute time of reflection.

Tony said: “It was such a huge privilege to be asked by Lili to speak at the Dave Day event. I was able to recite the words of comfort from Dave’s funeral and then we all sang Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer.

“After that I was able to reflect on the words of the hymn, followed by prayers and a blessing. All the bikers who were there were so respectful and there was a great response.

“It was an absolutely amazing day and the people of Barrow, and all the biker visitors were able to show their love and appreciation for Dave. It was wonderful to watch all the bikes stream into town. The people of the town treated the bikers like royalty, waving and cheering as they drove along.”

Dave Day concluded with a music concert at the Barrow Raiders ground, featuring Massive Wagons.
