Cockermouth went top of the Holmen Iggesund Cumberland League with a 66-18 home win against Flimby.
Coach Liam McAvoy welcomed back Ryan Scott and he didn’t disappoint, scoring four tries and kicking a goal late-on.
The other Cockermouth tries came from man of the match Alex Butterworth (3), Ethan Cross, Spencer Fulton, Danny Price, Lewis Bancroft, Alex Barton and Rhys Burr. Regan Tinnion kicked five goals.
For Flimby, who had score all their points in the first half when they trailed 30-18 at the break, there were tries from Nathan Kirkbride, Rhys Booty and Dan Weir, who kicked three goals.
Flimby’s Ricky Morrison said: “Despite the scoreline it was a great performance from our young lads with so many regulars unavailable and they played well.
“Cockermouth used the downhill pitch to their advantage in the second-half and were able to pull away.
“Kurt Degraff and Ben Parker gave solid performances in the forwards along with Zack Bancroft, not missing any tackles while Dan Weir’s kicking for us was spot on.”
Distington A scored a 28-10 home win over Askam but it had been very tight in the first half, locked at 6-6 when they took their break.
Distington scored tries from Tom Glover (2), man of the match Kelvin Lynch (2) and Brandon Walker, who kicked four goals.
For Askam there were tries from man of the match Lucas James and Rob Cockayne while Lewis Stables kicked the goals.
Aiden Worthington, the head coach at Distington said: “It was a good hard battle for 50-60 minute after being level at half-time.
“Askam came with just the one sub so when they suffered a couple of injuries it was hard for them. Our young lads got on top and thoroughly deserved the win in the end.”
Chris Broadley, Askam’s player coach added: “I can’t fault the effort from the lads but we just ran out of numbers in the end and Distington ran away with it. We had only been able to travel with just the 14 men.”
In the other game Ellenborough A beat Egremont A 38-20 in an entertaining game.
Man of the match Jordan Ostle scored four tries for Elbra and he was joined on the score-sheet by Luke Jackson, Grant Jones and Josh Patterson, who also kicked a goal. Shaun Mumberson landed four goals.
The Egremont tries came from Nathan Preston, Jack Pae, James Messenger and Jordan Moyes, who also kicked two goals.
It had only been 18-16 after a hard-fought first half but Elbra stepped-up a gear after the break.
Paul Gorge, Ellenborough’s head coach said: “It was a really good game with some promising young players on show on both sides.
“We had a couple of first teamers in and Jonathan Goulding who hasn’t played for nearly six months and they helped guide our youngsters round the pitch.”
For Egremont, Kevin Brown said: “It was exactly as I expected with two young sides going hard at each other.
“We got off to a great start and went 10-0 up before the experienced first teamers in the Ellenborough side got them into the game.
“A few injuries to our forwards limited my rotation in the front row and that was a bit of a factor. But all cred to the lads who showed a lot of heart and determination because at one point it could have been a cricket score – and we did score the last try.
I was very proud of my boys as they haven’t played for about s month and after being unable to field a team last week it was great to get 16 players out for a game.”
Brown also gave a big shout-out to new referee Ellis Postlethwaite who was in charge of only his third or fourth game.
