Last night saw a return to Redmain for the second in the series of three trails, where punters enjoyed pleasant weather and there were good running conditions for the hounds.
The seniors got things off to a start with a slip of 15 with the betting tight at the top of the bookies board – Mel at evens, Cautious 5/2, Silver Dream and Sarah Jane 3/1 and Lady Million 7/2 with the rest of the field 5/1 bar.
As they went through the bottoms and headed towards Bridekirk four of the fancied runners had established a lead – Mel, Sarah Jane, Cautious and Silver Dream.
When they showed on the finish, however, it was Silver Dream for Darren and Julie McMaster and Sarah Jane for Nicola McMaster and Sadie Wilson who were heading up the race.
As they neared the finishing line Silver Dream just pulled away and crossed the line a length in front of her kennelmate. The win for Silver Dream is her fourth of the season and moves her up to joint third place with Mel in the Championship.
Cautious for Isla Hetherington and Stephen Riley stayed on well to claim third place with Foxparke Fair Lady finishing well to get fourth place for the Napier and Butler kennel. Mel finished fifth for Les Reid and Ellie Napier, with the Foxparke team getting the last ticket with Foxparke Side Kick.

The open pups were next to slip with a field of 14 and Thornton was favourite at 4/6 on, with Millie’s Lass at 7/2 and Sonny Bill and Minnie Million at 3/1, with the rest of the hounds 8/1 bar.
As the hounds showed in the bottom it was Thornton and Sonny Bill who had established a lead with Minnie Million hanging on in third place.
As they showed on the long run in this is how they came in with Thornton finishing very impressively to take the win for Darren McMaster, Anthony Skelton and Sadie Wilson. This was his twelfth win of the season and is now only two points behind Huntsman’s Time.
Sonny Bill ran another good race and finished well in second place for Laura Steele, Andrew Bulman and Billy Birkett. Minnie Million had remained in third place all the way round and finished well for Brian and Joy Lister.
The Miterdale team for Sophie Steele and her mum ran well and finished in fourth and fifth place with Miterdale Rumble and Miterdale Ruler. Millie’s Lass also ran a good race to finish in sixth place for George McGimpsey and Gillian and Millie Telford. They were pleased with her performance given that they had travelled all the way down from Langholm to run.
The last race of the night was for the open maidens with a good slip of 26 hounds. As with these races it was a wide open affair with Charisma at evens, Miterdale Dusk at 2/1, Miterdale Dust at 3/1, Huntsman’s Rally 5/1, Foxparke Elliot’s Lad , Foxparke Whoosh both at 6/1 with the rest of the field at 8/1 bar.

The night had changed and it was now raining heavily but it didn’t deter the dogs. As they went through the bottom the visibility had reduced and the punters were struggling to make out the dogs.
As they came on the finish two dogs had a lead and it was Carole and Stanley Jackson’s Charisma who finished well and just held on to take the win from Paul Airey and Joanne Hodgson’s Meadow Artisan who finished in second place.
Kennelmate Meadow Maggie finished in third place with Lucky Moon for Tony Jackson and Ian Rudd in fourth place with Brian and Joy Lister’s Imagine who eventually crossed the line after shaking himself down as the rain was coming down heavy by now. The last ticket of the night went to the Foxparke team with Foxparke Elliot’s Lad who finished well.
The night provided a mother and son combination as winners – Charisma winning the open maidens and son Thornton taking the pups.
Trailing moves to Cold Fell on Wednesday night for a four-race card, then it is another busy weekend with trails being held at the Lorton Hound Show on Saturday and then at Shap on Sunday with a four-race card.
