In their debut season of competitive women’s rugby league, Workington Town Ladies clinched their very first trophy as they scored four tries to defeat Leigh Miners Ladies 22 – 8 at Wigan to won the RFL Women’s Plate, writes John Hastings.
Town’s tries came from Shakalaya Okesene, Millie Woodburn, Katie Jackson and Caitlin Jenkinson, with Alice Rush (twice) and Jaya Pilkington supplying the conversions.
For eight members of Town’s winning squad, it was victory Deja-Vu as Jenkinson, Woodburn, Stephanie Ratcliffe, Beth Adams, Juliet Porter, Meagan McAndrew, Sophie Weir and Rachael Wood were all part of the Workington Zebra Finches squad that won the RFU Community Plate at Worcester in May.
Town are still in the hunt for a “Double” as they lie third in RFL Women’s League 2, only two points off the top, and are back on the road again next Sunday when they take on Sheffield Eagles A, while their next game at Derwent Park is against Wigan St Judes on September 1.
Workington’s next fixture at Derwent Park is on August 25 against Barrow and District.
