Last night saw the first of two trails to take place at Gilsland, just north of Carlisle and Tuesday’s four race card proceeds the annual Gilsland Show which takes place on Sunday.
The show will be hosting the second of the hound trails, and once again will be putting on four races.
With a busy week of hound trailing the size of the fields have been reduced with only 10 runners taking part.
None of the Championship contenders were running so it have a chance for some of the lesser lights to shine.
As the hounds came back onto the finish there were five hounds together and it was David Clifford’s hound Eden Rayna from Penrith who finished the best to win from Brian Graham and Eleanor Chisholm’s Eleanor’s Lass.

A close third was Nicola McMaster and Sadie Wilson’s Sarah Jane with Brian and Joy Lister’s Dream Catcher not too far behind in fourth place.
Last of the five leaders was Stanley and Carole Jackson’s Croft Lass while the last ticket was eventually taken by Eagle Love, last week’s Langholm Common Riding winner for Linda Neale, Mark, Josh and Georgia Bryden.
The open pups were up next again with just ten runners. George McGimpsey’s two Millies – Lad and Lass – were the ones to watch with the most potential.
It was a long race with the extra five minutes that was added on following the AGM back in February paying off otherwise the trail would have been void.
As predicted it was the two hounds that belonged to George McGimpsey and his daughter and grand daughter who came in front. Millie’s Lass crossed the line in front of the judges and then Millie’s Lad went behind them but it was close for third place with Malcolm Holmes’ Senor just getting up to beat Flecky Jack who was getting his third open puppy ticket, his second in a week so good for him, definitely showing improvement, perhaps he likes the warm weather.

In fifth place was Spring Rhyme for Ashley Horn and Sarah White followed home by Croft Lady for Stanley and Carole Jackson.
The open maidens were next with 15 runners. It was Young Harry for Brian Graham who showed first and crossed the line ahead of Eagle Rock for the Neale and Bryden kennel.
David Clifford’s other hound Eden Romina finished in third place boosting her points for the Open Maiden point competition now with a twenty point lead on her nearest rival Thorn Thunder.
Imagine for Brian and Joy Lister finished in fourth place with Summer Spirit in fifth and the last ticket going to Delta Script for Sarah Harper and family.

The last race of the night was the open restricted with another slip of 10 hounds. This time it was Tracey Hill and Co’s Huntsman’s Sparkle who came in first to win with Sir Robert for Malcolm Holmes’ finishing in second place.
In third was Denton Shamrock for Sandra Mordue and Lee Wall with Splendid Lily for Donna and Shaun Hetherington finishing in fourth place.
Mr Finnegan for Sandra Mordue finished in fifth with the Telford’s Fire lady taking the last ticket of the night.
