Full-back Liam Brockbank will be back at Borough Park this season – but playing for Bamber Bridge.

Workington Reds manager Mark Fell had tried to re-sign the popular defender but he has opted to join their NPL Premier Division rivals.

He and former Blackpool defender Will Squires have been on trial at Bamber Bridge throughout pre-season and now both have been announced as signing for the Lancashire side.

The pair have featured for the Brig during pre-season and done enough to secure permanent deals ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

Left-back Brockbank, 23, arrives from Altrincham and has plenty of Northern Premier League experience from his time at Lancaster City and Workington.

Over the past two seasons, Brockbank made eight appearances in the National League for the Robins, including three during the 2023/24 campaign.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at fellow NPL side Warrington Rylands. During the 12 games he was in the team, the Blues kept five clean sheets.

A product of the Carlisle United youth system Barrow-born Brockbank was signed for Reds by Danny Grainger in 2019 shortly after being appointed manager.

He spent two seasons with the Reds and he was then persuaded by Mark Fell to join Lancaster City in 2021 – described at the time as “his main target.”

After a season there he stepped-up to the National League with Altrincham but his progress was halted by a serious knee injury.

He has recovered, and still only 23, will have ambitions to get back into National League football.

The 20-year-old central defender Will Squires makes the move to the SFC Stadium from League One side Blackpool.

Squires began last season on loan at Bamber Bridge. He made seven appearances before he was recalled to make his Tangerines debut in the EFL Trophy against Liverpool’s U21s.

He had loan spells later in the season with Southport in the National League North, then Hyde United in the NPL.

Jamie Milligan’s side begin their league campaign with a trip to Whitby Town on Saturday 10 August. They visit Borough Park on Tuesday, September 17.

  • Former Reds centre-forward Lewis Reilly, who left the club in the summer after two years to sign for NPL West side Bootle, has gone on loan for a month to Glossop NE of the North West Counties Premier Division.
