A GoFundMe page has helped a local football club raise what they were looking for inside 24 hours.
Deer Orchard were desperate to acquire a unit to house visiting changing rooms to their Wakefield Road ground in Cockermouth.
Luke Ivison, an Orchard player launched the page yesterday and has quickly raised the £1,500 that was initially targeted.
Club secretary Gary Horsley has been involved with the club for 39 years and he had priced a good second hand unit which will cost them £1,850 plus VAT.
Orchard don’t have that kind of money with players paying to play each week which contributes to weekly running costs.
The club is preparing for their 62nd consecutive season in Sunday League football and new rules coming into the recently established West Cumberland Sunday League aimed at driving up standards, insist changing facilities must be provided for both teams.
Orchard’s long serving hut had been seriously vandalised and Story had helped out by providing a container last season.
But now another one is required and thanks to the generosity of locals that is within the club’s reach.
A major donation came from Cloud Competitions and one of the founders George Bean spent his teenage years in the town and has great affection for it.
They had already supported other sporting clubs in the town and plan more help in the future.
Orchard’s two founder members 62 years ago, Tom Allen and John Walsh have also contributed to the fund.
Orchard are one of the oldest Sunday League teams in the country, and probably are the one with the longest consecutive record of games played.
They are also part of Cockermouth’s history, and very much involved with the community.
At the last count the GoFundMe page had raised £1,563 with 43 donations.
