Greg McCaragher is back in football after opting not to re-join Workington Reds for the 2024/25 season.
McCaragher has opted to join Gretna 2008 in the Lowland League, linking up with former Reds team-mate Jim Atkinson.
The 25-year-old spent two seasons at Borough Park and after announcing he was leaving Kendal Town, one of his former clubs, had expressed an interest in signing him.
However the possibility of taking a coaching job with Carlisle United, and moving to the city, alerted Gretna to the possibility of signing the player.
On Gretna’s social media, their director of football Nikki White said they moved quickly to secure McCaragher’s signature when learning of his availability.
He went on: “I saw that Greg had rejected a deal at Workington despite being a regular over the past few seasons.
“However, knowing Greg is Lancaster based I didn’t think the move would be feasible. I was then tipped off by a contact that Greg was taking a coaching role at CUFC – we were in contact straight away and the deal was done in a matter of hours.
“Greg’s a fantastic player and a great character who will fit in with this squad seamlessly.”
The signing is subject to international clearance but Gretna hope to have him registered in time for next weekend’s Lowland League clash with Celtic B.
Gretna have started the League season with two wins and two defeats, losing at home 3-1 on Saturday to Linlithgow Rose.
