A unique car club has launched in Cockermouth – allowing people to have access to a car only when they need it.
Enterprise Car Club is the idea of new sustainability group Cockermouth Climate Action Now, and is based at the police station on Lamplugh Road in Cockermouth.
Car clubs allow members to access shared hire vehicles for as long as needed, from a few hours to a couple of days, without the hassle and expense of owning a car.
The group said: “Having shared vehicles situated at convenient locations around towns means that fewer people need to own cars, and it also leads to less traffic on the road.”
The Enterprise Car Club has two cars available for hire in Cockermouth.
It uses an online booking system and the cars are unlocked from a mobile phone app, so no queueing is required. The exact hire price will vary depending on mileage, time and day. People can rent the car for just 30 minutes if needed.
Jack Tatham, of Cockermouth, recently became a member and said that he used the car to transport bulky items that wouldn’t fit on his bike.
He said: “It’s an easy and affordable alternative to car ownership,” he said.
