After the excitement of the weekend with the HTA Premier Trails, Monday’s action was just a bit further on from Uldale at Calebreak so very similar running.
The senior hounds were first to be slipped with a field of 11 runners.
As the hounds showed on the finish they were well strung out with the warm night perhaps catching out a few of them.
One hound had a lead of ten to twenty yards and as they came into view it was Lady Million. She came in and won easily, making up for the disappointment at the weekend of finishing second in a tight finish for Joy and Brian Lister. The little bitch is certainly back on form and liking the warmer conditions.
The second hound crossed the line and it was Summer Spirit for Willie and Daphne Mark, following up her good run at the weekend when she won the senior maiden race.
In third place was Foxparke Beep Beep with a good run for the Napier and Butler kennel. Willie and Daphne’s other hound Sportsman finished in fourth place with Croft Lass for Stanley and Carol Jackson in fifth. Denton Shamrock for Sandra Mordue and Lee Wall took the last ticket.
Lady Million won the same trail last year when the evening’s trailing was interrupted by the bad weather conditions which resulted in the last two trails being having to be cancelled.
Next to slip were the open pups with 15 runners. Table leader Huntsman’s Time was running and connections were looking for her to improve on her performance at the weekend where she just finished out of the ticket.
Her nearest rival Thornton was also running and he had finished in fifth place on Saturday.
As they came back onto the finish there was a group of six hounds who had broken away.
It was anybody’s race to win as they came over the brow and on to the finish but it was Laura Steele, Andrew Bulman and Billy Birkett’s Sonny Bill who stuck in and maintained his lead to cross the line in first place with the other hounds chasing him down.
It was George McGimpsey and Gillian and Millie Telford’s Millie’ Lad who finished second with Joy and Brian’s Minnie Million claiming third ticket.
Christine Brownlee’s Maeve finished in fourth place, with George’s other hound Millie’s Lass in fifth. Huntsman’s Trust was the last of the group to cross the line to earn the sixth ticket. The win for Sonny Bill is his third open puppy win of the season. Thornton, who was the odds on favourite, and Huntsman’s Time were unplaced.
Next to slip were the open restricted hounds with 16 runners. When they showed on the finish there were plenty of hounds in with a chance but it was Overwater Eddie for James and Eleanor Irving who had a slight lead and he managed to hold on to cross the line from Carol and Stanley Jackson’s Charisma in second place.
Joy and Brian Lister’s Imagine finished in third place, with Julie Burkinshaw’s and Brian Graham’s Bretton in fourth.
Christopher Henderson and Frank Dockeray’s Shine On and Light Up took fifth and sixth ticket. Just like Lady Million, Overwater Eddie won last year at Calebreak so clearly likes the running which is technically just on his doorstep.
Action moves down south of the county tonight with trails at Rusland. They are holding a three race card in advance of the Rusland Show on Saturday. The first trail gets underway at 6pm.
