The 1-1 draw was a familiar score line to Workington and Leek Town, reunited in the Premier Division after recent promotions from NPL West.
There has never been much between them in previous battles home and away,
Overall it was probably a fair result from an open game which saw both sides enjoy spells of good possession but found little to test the respective keepers.
Leek’s Dino Visser produced the save of the game in time added on at the end when he pawed away a snap shot from Steven Rigg.
Leek’s Brendon Daniels headed against the Workington bar when he should have scored and minutes later a fierce angled drive from Dav Symington clipped the top of the Leek bar.
The visitors had gone ahead after 18 minutes when Workington didn’t clear a corner and centre-half Oliver Harrison fired a low shot across keeper Alex Mitchell into the bottom corner.
Workington drew level on 32 minutes when a ball in wide from Jamie Allen was flicked into Symington’s path by Rigg and last season’s top scorer thumped it home from ten yards.
Alex Hurst was always the biggest threat for Leek out wide on the left with several deliveries testing the home defence. It was another cross from Hurst which should have been dispatched by Daniels but he struck the woodwork.
For Workington there was an eye-catching performance in midfield from Kaedyn Kamara, as the Preston loanee was a willing worker in mid-field both winning and delivering the ball.
As usual Steven Rigg worked prodigiously hard up front and came close to winning it for Reds at the end.
