Deer Orchard have made the headlines with their successful effort to raise money for new changing rooms and are now intent on stealing the limelight for their efforts on the field.

The first round of mid-week matches in the West Cumberland Sunday League on Thursday saw them earn a hard-fought 2-1 win at Butcher’s in the Premier Division.

Calum West put them in front but Lewis Mattinson levelled for the Maryport side before half-time.

It was a bit scrappy in the second-half and could have gone either way before Kyran Bertram popped up with the winner for Orchard.

That’s two wins from their opening two games but the big test will come this afternoon when they play champions Northside at Hall Park.

Northside have also opened with two victories, the second in mid-week being a 6-3 victory over Bluebell.

Tyler Harrell (2), Josh Hogarth, Harry Watson, Jack Nixon and Logan Bosward scored the Northside goals with Carl Denver (2) and Matthew Perry responding for Bluebell.

Brett Smith scored a hat-trick as Moresby beat Lowca and also on target were Nathan Walkinshaw (2), Ellis Trotter (2) and Robbie Baggley (2).

Aaron Wynd replied for the beaten Pirates who were all at sea in this one.

In Division One the Zebras and Whitehaven shared 16 goals with the Workington side coming out in front 10-6.

Karl Fillingham (4), Declan Moore, Scott Underwood,  David Conway, Michael Carruthers, Zac Starkie and Michael Herbert took the Zebras into double figures.

Defences definitely weren’t on top as Whitehaven found the net through Jay Connor (2), Keenan Mackay (2), Jake Davidson and Dylan Moore.

The all-Copeland clash between King’s Arms and Thornhill was another that produced goals, and was a bit closer.

Un the end the King’s Arms triumphed 4-3 with goals from Lewis Park (2), Coady Scott and Luke Elliot.

Nathan Dryden, Ryan Byrne and Gareth Humphreys were on the mark for Thornhill.

Salterbeck were 5-1 winners over Borough Miners with goals from Liam Currier, Jack White, Joe Courtney, Paul Monkhouse and Logan Potter.  Dan Graham struck Borough’s sole reply.

Royal Oak were also 5-1 winners when they visited The Sun and on target were Aaron Atkinson, Ryan Smith, Owen Street and Scott Dryden were on target and they also had the help of an own goal.

Dylan Hudson scored the goal for the Sun.

Newcomers Sun Inn Athletic earned a point in a 1-1 draw at Swan thanks to a strike from Matty Hornsby. Andrew Leech was the Swan scorer.

This afternoon’s games are: Premier Division – Lowca Pirates v Butcher’s; Moresby Rangers v Dearham Commercial; Northside v Deer Orchard; Sun Inn v Bluebell.

Division One – Senhouse Street v Swan; The Sun v Borough Miners; Thornhill v Sun Inn Athletic; Whitehaven v Salterbeck; Zebras v Royal Oak.
