A poor second-half performance cost Workington Reds as they went down to a 3-0 defeat at Ashton United.
Mark Fell’s side had been very much in contention in the first half with strong claims for a goal early on and several opportunities wasted.
The best chance fell to Preston loanee Kaedyn Kamara when he was through one-on-one but couldn’t finish. From there Ashton broke and Louis White put them ahead on the stroke of half-time.
Reds were never as close in the second-half and weren’t able to close down their hosts as they had been in the first-half.
Ashton had seized the initiative and on 77 minutes they doubled their lead through Darius Osei which effectively sealed the game and the fact that Tom Denton scored a third in the 90th minute was a statistical blot on Reds record.
But the West Cumbrians don’t have long to dwell on the defeat for they are back in action tomorrow at home to Hebburn Town.
Hebburn had been clear League leaders going into Saturday’s games but a 1-1 home drawn means they are now in third place, joint leaders with Hyde United and Macclesfield Town.
Although dropping their first points on Saturday they will arrive at Borough Park unbeaten in their opening five games.
This is also a dress rehearsal for Saturday’s FA Cup tie when the North East side have to travel over again for the first qualifying round tie.
Reds were without four players at Ashton but the quartet of skipper Dav Symington, Cieran Casson, Jordan Little and Steven Swinglehurst will be back in contention.
