Carlisle City were beaten 3-0 at Whickham last night but the scoreline did not really reflect the game.
The two sides were evenly matched but it was the best player on the field who made the difference for Whickham.
After a goal-less first half, when both sides had defended well but had struggled to find a finish, the game was sparked to life by Mason Hardy.
Four minutes into the second-half the winger cut in from the right and curled a 30 yarder into the top corner – as fine a goal as you could wish to see.
Then on the hour a jink and a shimmy from Hardy ended with a shot which found the bottom corner to double the Whickham lead.
City went with plenty of attacking intent after that but couldn’t find a goal and as they were chasing the game the home side broke three minutes from time to score a third by Cameron Brewis.
City now have two home games in a row, but both will be tough. Blyth Town, splashing the cash this year in a bid to further their ambitions, are at Gilford Park on Saturday.
Blyth were 2-1 winners at Shildon last night to remain third in the table but six points behind leaders Boro Rangers.
On Tuesday City entertain Birtley Town who lost 2-1 at home to Crook Town last night and are down to 18th in the table.
