Football Insider appear to be well off the mark with their suggestion that Iain Wood is in the frame for the sporting director role at Carlisle United.

Carlisle had planned to have a sporting director in place at the same time as new manager Mike Williamson and the football website put Wood firmly at the head of the list.

However reports from Barrow today indicated that there was no substance behind the story and Wood was perfectly happy at Holker Street where he has been doing a good job.

Employing a sporting director and head coach in tandem was the new restructuring plan of the owners, the Piatak family, but their main target Williamson’s colleague at MK Dons, Liam Sweeting turned down the opportunity to move north and instead signed a new deal with the southern club.

Williamson has been in charge for three games, starting with a win at Swindon before two home defeats.

David Flitcroft and Ricky Martin have been mentioned as possibilities for the role at Brunton Park but a number of candidates are understood to have applied for the key recruitment role at Brunton Park.

Wood’s record at Barrow has been good since he took up the role in May 2022 and he is now working closely with new manager Stephen Clemence.
