Corinthians took the spoils in a physical but competitive game at Windscale last night between the two sides 1st and 2nd in the Wearside League with the Durham side coming out on top 1-0.
Durham’s tactics were to continually use the long ball hoping to get their pacey wide men beyond the Windscale backline. The Atoms continued with their patient build-up play but unable to create any clear-cut scoring opportunities.
The only goal of the game came in the 25th minute from a corner kick.
The ball lofted into the Atoms six-yard box was only partially cleared, landing at the feet of Yaya Jammeh who fired in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box giving Windscale keeper Fin Stephenson little chance to save.
The game continued in much the same pattern in the second half as Corinthians persisted with the long ball which were handled capably by the hosts’ defence, Dan Morgan in particular breaking up any threat from the visitors.
The Atoms looked more likely to bring the scores level but were unable to seriously trouble Harry Renwick between the posts for Corinthians.
Play got a little heated from the 60-minute mark onwards with the Durham outfit intent on not conceding and the Atoms chasing the game.
During that period Windscale had two players receive cautions and the visitors also had two players cautioned and one dismissed for a reckless challenge two minutes from the end of the 90 minutes.
It was a good spectacle for the supporters and a performance that the Atoms were probably deserving of a share of the points.
Windscale are on the road on Saturday hoping to get back to winning ways when they travel to Shotton Recreational Ground to take on Shotton Colliery.
