Whitehaven moved away from the foot of the West Lancashire League with a good 3-0 home win over Lostock St Gerard’s.
The west Cumbrians have been threatening this kind of performance for a while but have recently given away two goal and three goal leads – but not on this occasion.
Although keeper Tommy Fowler had to make a couple of excellent stops the home defence generally gave him top class cover.
St Gerard’s had been right in touch with the leaders ahead of this game but could have no complaints about the result. The Preston side were second best for long periods of the game.
Although they had been in charge Whitehaven didn’t take the lead until the 43rd minute when Gabriel Lee finished-off well. Two minute later the outstanding George Frampton was fouled in the area and Josh Hilton knocked home the penalty.
So the Cumbrians enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the break and after recent episodes were keen to make sure another giveaway didn’t happen so there was extra determination about them on this occasion.
But the points weren’t sealed until the 83rd minute when Lee knocked home his second goal.
That victory will boost the side ahead of next week’s trip to play Tempest United, with the Bolton side riding high at the top of the league.
