Work to repair the roof of the historic building which houses the Brathay Trust at Clappersgate near Ambleside has revealed some interesting markings.
Builders carrying out work to the property on the shores of Windermere found a variety of graffiti, some dating from 1881.
Etched into the roof lead was the word Ambleside and what is thought to be a name, possibly of a Victorian visitor.

“This part of the roof was accessible so we’re not sure exactly who the name is,” Robyn Wynn, Brathay’s marketing and communications lead, said. “It could be someone who lived here or was visiting.”
The refurbishment work is part of a longer term plan to repair and rejuvinate the estate which hosts young people from all over the UK.

Established in 1946 by Francis C Scott, the charity aims to improve the life chances of young people through experiential learning and community support.
