Niall Canavan commits to Barrow until 2026

Barrow’s club captain Niall Canavan has signed a new contract with the club running through until the summer of 2026.

Canavan originally joined the Bluebirds on transfer deadline day in January 2022 from Bradford City.

Since then, he has gone onto make 123 appearances for Barrow and has become an ever-present figure in the centre of the Barrow defence.

Not only has Canavan established himself as a top defender, but he’s also proven to be an important figure behind the scenes at the club, first taking on the role as Barrow captain at the beginning of the 2022/2023 season.

On his contract extension Canavan said: “I’m really happy to get it all sorted ahead of time and to get that solidarity and stability, and I’m just looking forward to continuing moving forward with the club.

“When I first came in, I needed a change from what I had, I needed a fresh challenge and it’s provided everything I was looking for at the time and the longer I’ve been here, the more it’s been built into my life and my family’s life.

“My kids are devoted Barrow fans like my little boy is at school today with his Barrow kit on because its own clothes day, and that’s the only thing he wants to wear!”

The 33-year-old Canavan has played most League games for his first club Scunthorpe United (154 in seven years) and also played 78 times for Plymouth Argyle.

He will be hoping to top the Scunthorpe total with the Bluebirds.
