Kendal Town missed too many chances as they went down 3-2 at Guisborough Town in the Northern League Division One.
Manager Jimmy Marshall said afterwards: “I thought we had enough chances to win two or three games but it just wasn’t to be.
“We weren’t clinical enough where it mattered and their keeper made a number of great saves.”
Marshall also pointed to the fact that his side had also given away three sloppy goals – tywo of them where they had clear opportunities to clear. He thought there was a possibility the ither might have been offside.
“I thought for much of the game we did fine but there was probably a 20-minute spell which cost us. Despite the defeat there were[plenty of positives to take out of it.
“One of them was actually the fact that we scored a penalty which gets the monkey off our backs. Fair play to Killer (Tom Kilifin) for putting it away,” said the manager.
Kendal had taken the lead after just six minutes with a simple finish from James Bailey but in a good spell Gainsborough scored twice through Kurtis Howes (10) and Kyle Davis (22) to lead at the break.
Howes grabbed a second on 64 minutes but only some great work from captain, goalkeeper Rob Dean kept the 3-1 lead.
Kendal pulled pone back five minutes from time through Kilifin from the penalty spot but they couldn’t manage a third.
The Mintcakes have a break now before they play Crook Town at home on Saturday.
Kendal have slipped out of the play-offs to seventh while improving Crook are 11th, four points behind but with two games in hand.
They were 2-1 winners yesterday away to Northallerton in the FA Vase.
