A support group for new mums is launching in Wigton.
Happy Mums, an award-winning social enterprise dedicated to supporting maternal mental health, will meet on Thursdays from 10am to 11am at the Barton Laws Community Room, Shorefields.
Aimed at mums with children of all ages, the group offers a warm, safe environment for women to share their experiences and feelings openly, without judgement.
The Wigton Happy Mums Support Group provides a welcoming space for mums to connect over a hot drink and receive support from peers who truly understand the realities of motherhood. Each session will have a dedicated helper on hand to keep little ones entertained, allowing mums to take some valuable time to focus on their own well-being.
Emma Budworth, Wigton’s community engagement co-ordinator for Happy Mums, said: “We are thrilled to bring the Happy Mums support group to Wigton.
“It’s a place for mums to come as they are, speak freely, and feel supported, whether they’re parenting a newborn or a teenager. This group is all about creating a community where mums can let go of societal expectations and simply be honest.”
Happy Mums was launched in 2015 and has since provided support to over 100 women each year through its peer-led model.
With two established in-person support groups in Carlisle, one weekly online group open to mums across the UK, and two specialist online groups for younger mums and those with children with additional needs in partnership with Diff-Ability, Happy Mums said it has seen first-hand the benefits of accessible mental health support for mothers.
The Wigton group launch forms part of Happy Mums’ Community Growth Project, which aims to bring tailored maternal mental health support to communities across North and West Cumbria, made possible thanks to funding from The National Lottery Awards for All and UKSPF funding via the Cumbria Community Foundation.
Lucinda Bray, managing director of Happy Mums, said: “Wigton is in a wonderful position to host a Happy Mums group, offering peer support not only to mums in Wigton but also to those in surrounding towns and villages.
“Maternal mental health is often seen as only relevant to the early years of parenting, but that anxiety and ‘mum guilt’ don’t just disappear. As children grow, so does the list of worries. We want mums with children of all ages to know that there is a safe space where they can find support among others who truly understand.”
