Four young Cumbrians have completed a challenging trials day with Super League club Salford Red Devils, writes Ben Challis.
Hensingham’s Ashton Quigley, Seaton Rangers’ Jacob Walker and Lucas Roper and Egremont Rangers’ Jayden Tyson were among the 40 youngsters taking part in phase two of the Red Devil’s Academy selection process.
Eighty youngsters had been selected for phase one.
Prop Ashton was a key part of this year’s Hensingham Under-16s squad which secured a historic double winning the North West Counties Division One title and the BARLA Cumbria Cup.
He was also selected for the England Community Lions Regional Under-16s against France.
He said: “The trials were difficult, but it was good to see how I compared against players from around the country, some of whom were up to two years older than me.
“The set-up was mainly based around games or game like scenario drills, which were good, especially for someone like me who enjoys the contact in rugby league.
“I think many players see the academies as the main pathway to playing rugby professionally, and it’s a dream for many players, and definitely mine.”
Jacob, who was capped for Scotland Under-16s this season, added: “I felt that the trials were brilliant and the match was excellent. I’m a Leeds Rhinos supporter through and through, but the opportunity we were offered gives me a lot of respect for Salford, and all the Salford coaching staff were fantastic with us, and so friendly.
“I now feel like I could achieve my dreams of playing professional rugby and reaching the top level of competing in Super League. I also feel like It will help recognise Scotland as a growing force in rugby league if I can continue this journey.”
After the trials the Red Devils tweeted: “Some fantastic talent on display on display this morning on our final Elite Academy trial. Keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks for news on the squad, coaching team and fixtures.”
