Carlisle City put up an encouraging away performance against Marske, despite going under 1-0.
A number of disappointing displays on their travels have contributed to City’s slide down the Northern League Division One table.
But this was more like it and perhaps the fact that manager Dan Kirkup laced up his boots again to play at the back might have contributed to a more solid defensive effort.
In essence City did everything but score and played some decent football along the way, even with some key players missing.
The only goal of the contest came in the 13th minute from McCorrie Carmichael, as it still divided the two teams at the end.
Carmichael did have the opportunity to double the Marske lead midway through the second-half but he had a penalty saved by Jonny Jamieson.
City have slipped to 17th in the table and although alarm bells aren’t ringing yet, they do need to start picking up league points.
They are still involved in two knock-out competitions – the FA Vase and the Fred Conway County Cup. They aim to go as far as possible in the first and try to win the second.
On Tuesday they have a big clash in the County Cup when they entertain neighbours Carlisle United at Gillford Park. Then on Saturday’s it’s the big Northern League derby against Kendal Town.
