Whitehaven were beaten 2-0 at home by CMB in the West Lancashire League, to leave them bottom of the table.
But there was enough in the performance to encourage manager Carl Short that they will start to improve quickly and start a rise up the table.
CMB were runners-up last year and are a respected side, currently lying third in the table to make another title bid over the second-half of the season.
Short didn’t think his side were helped by their draining extra-time exertions against Workington in the Fred Conway County Cup in mid-week.
It was 1-0 from the 20th minute until the first minute of time added on as Whitehaven were very much in the contest.
Charlie Scholes had put the visitors ahead and with Whitehaven pressing for the equaliser at the death Callum Walsh added the second.
Whitehaven have a break from League action this week when they travel to Turton in the second round of the Richardson Cup.
