Whitehaven’s injured skipper James Newton is being drafted onto the coaching team while he continues his recovery.
Newton will join head coach Anthony Murray and assistant coach Neil Frazer, working with Haven’s new-look, young squad in preparation for the League One season.
The Millom-based hooker, 32, broke his neck in the final game of the season ay home to Halifax and then had to undergo surgery in Newcastle.
Since then Newton, who was in his testimonial season, has been wearing a metal halo frame attached to his skull by screws, and which is designed to help his healing process.
Newton says he hasn’t ruled out playing again but is looking to the future with a start in some coaching duties.
He told the sport’s trade magazine Rugby League Express: “It’s a great chance for me to gain some coaching experience which is the path I want to progress down after my playing career.
“My ultimate goal is to return to the pitch and I will leave no stone unturned in that process.”
Meanwhile stars of the present day and yesteryear will be involved in a fund-raiser for Newton in Huddersfield on Sunday.
The Silverbacks Rugby League Legends are involved in the fundraising event at Rate My Takeaway Kitchen in the Packhorse Shopping Centre from 1.30pm.
Part of the afternoon involves an eating challenge, devouring repulsive or inedible burgers and pizzas!
