Plans have been lodged to repair an 18th century bridge on the A595 in South Cumbria after it was damaged 12 months ago.
An incident on the A595 Wreaks Causeway Bridge in Kirkby-in-Furness, which crosses Kirkby pool, in January 2024 caused a 5.5 metre length of wall to collapse over its central section, with a section of wall either side of the collapse also becoming displaced.
The bridge was made safe with concrete and reflective plastic barriers. The collapsed material was retrieved from Kirkby Pool and stored at a council depot.
Now Westmorland and Furness Council has submitted an application for listed building consent to repair the damage.
If granted, the council will apply for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order for a speed reduction from 60mph to 30mph past the work to safeguard workers. The council will also obtain permission to close the eastbound carriageway with two-way traffic lights.
The application is under consideration.
