Thousands of homes remain without power in Cumbria after Storm Eowyn battered the county.
Electricity North West said it had restored power to over 39,600 properties, despite wind speeds topping 75mph yesterday, Friday January 24.
Due to its severity, Storm Eowyn will be classed as Category 2, meaning that customers will be eligible for compensation payments of £85 if power has been cut off for 48 hours, and an extra £40 for every six hours afterwards.
Once all properties have been restored, Electricity North West will contact customers entitled to compensation payments, it said.
Over 137 separate incidents impacted the Electricity North West network. Around 7,300 properties remain without power across the North West.
Wind speeds across the region surpassed 80mph with damage to buildings and infrastructure along with branches and debris blown into the power network.
Wind speeds remained too high yesterday in many areas to climb safely and make repairs.
The network operator said that accessing sites was delayed because of falling trees on roads, many of which were cleared by its own tree cutting teams.
Catering and welfare hubs were set up to help people without power across the county.
Today, teams of door knockers will visit hard to reach areas across north Cumbria that have been impacted by the storm.
A helicopter has also been deployed to help assess damage on several kilometres of overhead line circuits.

Electricity North West said it was a ‘worst-case scenario’ time in an emerging situation. It added: “This follows on from extensive customer feedback who want to be made aware of the worst-case scenario.”
