A girls under-14 rugby team is the pride of its West Cumbrian village.
Lowca Lionesses began in 2023 after local girls asked the village’s rugby club to support an all-girls rugby league team and has gone from strength to strength.
Coach Vicky McGrady said: “The 2024 season has been phenomenal. Fast forward to now and to see how much these girls have developed, grown and bonded as a team and the opportunities they have experienced along the way has been amazing.
“We as coaches and the club are immensely proud of these young lionesses.
“This season alone the girls have played a total of 19 games, travelled and played teams all over the north of England.”
The games included 14 home and and away fixtures, three curtain raisers and mascots for women’s super league games, the North West girls rugby league festival in Wigan, a charity touch rugby tournament and the RFL Girls Rugby League Cup Competition.

Vicky added: “We couldn’t have done what we have last season without the dedication from all our players, support from parents/grandparents and family members and most of all from Lowca Rugby Club who have backed us and got behind us 100% this season.
“After the success in 2024 these girls are onto bigger and better things. This year the Lionesses are going into the RFL North West Girls competitive league with set fixtures and another cup completion to fulfil.

“These girls are more then ready for this new challenge and we have no doubt that these girls will not only embrace but will give it their all.
There is so much talent and potential among these Lionesses all down to their hard work, grit and determination who knows how far these girls will go.”

The Lionesses are now recruiting for under-12 players – years six and seven. Training is at St Benedict’s School on Wednesdays 5pm to 6pm. For more information, call Vicky on 0787238511.
