Health bosses have been awarded £3 million to install solar panels at three hospitals, which will save it over £500,000 a year.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the Government funding to install solar panels at Furness General Hospital in Barrow, Kendal’s Westmorland General Hospital and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

On March 21, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced a package of £100 million from Great British Energy for the NHS to install solar power and battery storage solutions to help drive down energy bills

The trust said it would install

  • 2,194 solar panels at Furness General Hospital, with annual estimated savings of £228,032
  • 1,434 solar panels at Westmorland General Hospital, with annual estimated savings of £152,012
  • 1,327 solar panels at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, with annual estimated savings of £147,639

David Sanderson, director of estates and facilities at the trust, said: “These solar panels will play a vital role in our plans to becomes a greener organisation.

“Once installed, they will also help lower out substantial energy costs and help improve our overall financial situation.

“We expect the solar panels to be operational from March 2026.”

It is among 78 trusts across England which has been given funding for solar panels.
