A man has been accused of unlawfully wounding a woman and threatening to burn down her house with petrol.
Jason McCreedy, 53, pleaded not guilty to four charges when he appeared in front of a deputy district judge at the city’s magistrates’ court.
One alleges that McCreedy made a threat to kill the woman during an incident at an address in Aspatria on Friday.
A second charge alleges that McCreedy made a separate threat to burn down the woman’s address, using petrol, and cut a ladder leading to the attic.
A third charge alleges the illegal possession of a kitchen knife, at North View in Aspatria, on the same date.
A fourth charge alleges that McCreedy unlawfully and malicious wounded the woman between February 15 and March 5 of 2024.
During today’s short court hearing, a prosecution gave a summary of the woman’s allegations, including those in relation to the threat of burning down her house.
McCreedy, the prosecution alleged, is said to have told the woman: “It is going to be your cremation today.”
After listening to the outline, and hearing McCreedy plead not guilty to each of the four charges, deputy district judge Steven Jonas concluded the case was too serious to be dealt with in the magistrates’ court.
It was formally sent to Carlisle Crown Court, where McCreedy is due to appear in front of a judge for a plea and trial preparation hearing on June 16.
No application for bail was made by the solicitor representing McCreedy who, court papers state, has a prison address.
Until the next hearing he remains remanded in custody.
