The Hay O’ Trail in Cockermouth has long stood as a testament to the grit and passion of fell runners, offering a course that is both deceptively simple and undeniably tough writes Vince Brand.
Each year, this great event gathers runners of all calibres to embrace the rugged beauty around Cockermouth.
This year, the beloved Hay O’ Trail made a triumphant return, drawing a spirited mix of local and visiting athletes for an unforgettable evening of endurance, speed, and camaraderie against the backdrop of stunning Cumbrian scenery.
A hallmark of the calendar since 2007, the race is held annually on the third Tuesday of May and spans a thrilling 6km.
Organised under the banner of Derwent Athletic Club, it is one of four flagship races that attract everyone – from seasoned competitors to eager newcomers.
Stepping into a new era, this year’s event was the first to be organised by Naomi and Matt Le Voi, a dynamic duo bringing fresh energy and thoughtful touches to the race. Known for their businesses – Lakeland Dog Walker, Summit Push Fitness, LMG Treks & Expeditions, and Lakeland Mountain Guides – the couple added a meaningful gesture by gifting every participant a pack of wildflower seeds.

The race itself was packed with great performances.
George Foster, of Keswick AC, proved unstoppable, conquering the punishing ascent to the summit in an impressive 12 minutes and 31 seconds, before crossing the finish line in just 22 minutes and 4 seconds to take the overall title.
Lou Osbourn, also from Keswick AC, shone brightly in the women’s competition, reaching the summit in 15 minutes and 58 seconds and completing the course in 28 minutes and 1 second.

Participation this year was as vibrant as ever, with 131 runners aged 17 to 76 lacing up to compete.
From chasing personal bests to simply immersing themselves in the friendly atmosphere, every runner contributed to the event’s enduring charm and sense of community.
For those inspired by this year’s Hay O’ Trail, the next challenge isn’t far away.

Derwent AC’s upcoming race, The Lambfoot Loop, is scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, starting and finishing at Cockermouth School.
Enthusiasts can pre-register at eventsupnorth.co.uk to secure their spot.

For anyone looking to join the thriving Derwent AC community, the club offers sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm, typically meeting at Cockermouth Leisure Centre.
With an annual membership fee of £25 – and the chance to try out a session or two before committing – it’s a perfect gateway into the spirited world of local running.
