A new kind of packaging is now able to be recycled across Cumbria.
Cumberland Council said Tetra Pak liquid carton packaging is now able to be recycled from kerbsides across the county.
Liquid carton packaging is paper based and is typically used for passata, milk and juice.
The packaging is now able to be rinsed out and placed with plastics in kerbside recycling.
Changes to waste and recycling collection
The new ability to recycle liquid carton packaging comes as changes to waste and recycling collections are being made in West Cumbria, starting next week.
From Monday, May 26, waste will be collected fortnightly in the former Allerdale area.
Over 10,500 households have requested a larger 180 litre bin to accommodate the changes in collections, which were previously weekly.
Cumberland Council started delivering replacement 180 litre bins last week.
It said due to the large number of requests, residents who don’t get their new bin before next week are requested to carry on using their existing bin.
They are encouraged to recycle as much as they can. If they can’t fit all their waste into their bin, residents can put out up to two bags of excess waste.
Residents that have provided an email address when requesting a replacement bin will be contacted a day or a few days before the delivery.
People are also urged to check their updated collection dates at www.cumberland.gov.uk/waste/binday as for around half of all Allerdale households their waste collection will be the week after.
A small number of residents may see changes to their usual collection days.
Following feedback, the council will create some new printable calendars, available to download from the council’s website.
Householders may also be eligible for an even larger or extra bin if they have a large household, young children in nappies or your household produces extra waste due to medical needs. www.cumberland.gov.uk/waste/largerbin
Cardboard/paper collections will increase from monthly to fortnightly from late September.
The council said the changes have been made following a review of the collection service, and said the changes would provide a more efficient service and make recycling easier.
New consistent approaches to missed collections and other standards are also now in place, the council added. They can be viewed on the council’s website.
