A Carlisle roller derby team is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Border City Roller Derby was founded in 2015 and trained hundreds of skaters, competed at national level in the British Roller Derby Championships, and supported several members selected to represent their countries at the upcoming 2025 Roller Derby World Cup.
Roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport played on roller skates. Two teams compete on an oval track, with one designated jammer per team scoring points by lapping members of the opposing team.
Border City Roller Derby said the sport demanded strategy, teamwork, and resilience.
It added that it had made a lasting impact on the Carlisle community through inclusive training programs, local events, and a commitment to accessibility in sport.
Garryck Spurgeon-Price, of Border City Roller Derby, said: “As we celebrate this milestone, we’re incredibly proud of everything our skaters and volunteers
have achieved.
“Roller derby has changed so many lives in Carlisle, and we’re excited for what the future holds.”
The league has become a hub for empowerment, particularly among women and LGBTQ+ individuals, and continues to grow as a welcoming space for all, it said, and added it had big plans for new training programmes, community outreach, and competitive play.
