A banned 18-year-old driver caused a north Cumbria crash which left another motorist injured.
Tyrus McAllister already had almost two dozen crimes to his name when the incident happened on June 17.
At around noon, McAllister had a conversation with a police officer outside his family’s home at Blackford, near Carlisle.
A short time later, the officer saw a Honda CRV vehicle drive past him. He recognised McAllister — who was subject to a disqualification — as the driver.
Prosecutor George Shelley told Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning: “Prior to the officer’s blue lights being activated, the vehicle accelerated away at speed on a bridge between Carlisle and Gretna.”
The marked patrol vehicle caught up with McAllister’s car, which by that stage had collided with another vehicle after failing to stop at a junction.
That driver was treated in hospital for chest and hip pain, and a knee laceration.
McAllister, on bail at the time, later admitted dangerous driving, disqualified driving and no insurance. He was said to have previous convictions for dangerous driving and banned driving, and a history of failing to comply with court-imposed requirements.
A defence solicitor said he fully accepted the seriousness of his actions and was acutely aware of the risk he could pose to others due to the manner of his driving.
Aged just 18, McAllister was still maturing, emotionally and mentally, added the lawyer.
Deputy district judge Anna Moran imposed an immediate 24-week prison sentence, highlighting the teen’s failing to comply with past non-custodial court requirements.
McAllister must also serve a three-year driving ban, and pass a mandatory extended retest before his licence is returned.
