After a heavy loss at League One leaders North Wales Crusaders, Workington Town have to bounce back on Sunday against the team second in the table.
Town host Midlands Hurricanes and know that they can’t afford any more slip-ups, particularly at home, with just six League games left in the season.
The Crusades beat the Cumbrians 56-22 after Town had started the day sitting second in the table and subsequently dropped to fourth.
Two tries in the opening seven minutes put Forster’s side 10-0 up and well in control but the visitors quickly levelled.
The hosts were 20-10 ahead at the break and although Jonty Gorley’s men pulled it back to 20-16 Crusaders a disastrous final quarter took the game away from the Cumbrians.
Former Whitehaven coach Carl Forster admits the hosts had to weather the storm once Workington got their first points on the board.
He told the Crusades website: “I thought we probably started too well. We weren’t asked to defend early on in the game and as a player, that can upset you a bit.
“Although we posted 10 points and you see everything go your own way, all of a sudden they got back-to-back sets and scored on play five.
“We went to 10-10 and we did really well to weather the storm. They are a dangerous team. They have got some unbelievable individuals in that team and they were second for a reason, I do really rate their team.
“It was tough but then the bench came on and I thought they upped it another level.”
Town had gone into the game with five key players missing and Gorley is hopeful of most of them being ready to return against the Hurricanes.
It’s also the club’s special charity day, which this year will benefit Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, and a good crowd is expected.
