Well, the sun beat down on Cumbrian cricket as, not for the first time, there was fascinating play to please the fans, writes Ashley Tiffen.

League leaders Furness were put into bat by visiting side Whitehaven and struggled to 159 all out in 43.5 overs. Only Lewis Gribbin (27) and George Smith (30NO) made any inroads to the Whitehaven attack with 2 wickets each for Foster, Stewart, Warde and Wright.

In reply, what might have seemed a gettable target, the visitors lost wickets regularly and with the exception of Kian Larmour (24), no one was able to tame the Furness bowling with the innings ending on 116 all out in 40 overs.

Dominic Hendricks led the bowling line with a brilliant 5 for 16 from his 10 overs.

Second placed Keswick made heavy weather of their visit to Workington. The home side, having won the toss and batted, were all out for 112 in 39.5 overs with only Skipper Lowden with 38 offering any resistance before being run out by his opposite number.

For Keswick, Glen Weightman took the plaudits with 5 wickets for 28 in his 10 overs, his best haul of the season so far.

However, what might seem an easy task for the visitors turned into a nightmare opening as they lost their first 5 wickets for only 45 in barely 15 overs.

Eventually, skipper Paul Hindmarch led the way home with 35 assisted by Finn Turnbull with 18 reaching 113 for a 3 wicket victory taking the 10 points.

Meanwhile, chasers Cockermouth were making Sandair hay as the sun shone as they pounded the Cleator attack for 347 for 3 in their 50 overs.

Skipper Matthew Sempill led by example with 93 off 78 balls and professional Shrikant Munde grabbed 96, including nine 4s and six 6s as he fell just short of a century when the overs were completed.

Openers Gareth White made 49 and Alex Grainger added 58 setting the foundations with a 104 run opening partnership.

In reply, it was clear the target was beyond the visitors as they struggled to 97 all out, handing the hosts a 250 run victory.

For the home side Ethan Harris-Knight took 4 for 16 and Alex Grainger made it a good day for him, taking 4 for 27. Joshua Brown took 2 for 16 as Cockermouth kept up their title chase in spectacular fashion.

At Gilfoot Park, bottom team Egremont again showed spirit as they fought to avoid the wooden spoon winning the toss they elected to put the visitors into the field in the blazing sun and went on to make 187 all out in 44 overs with professional Marwah hitting a measured 75 assisted by opener Ponticelli hitting 30 and wicketkeeper Thompson with 20.

Declan Tyson led the bowling with 3 for a meagre 19 from his 10 overs with the other wickets spread between six other bowlers.

In reply, the visitors made heavy weather reduced to 37 for 5 with only Nathan Waterson showing any resistance as he made 48 before falling to Marwah, and with him went their hopes as they ended on 131 all out.

Coady Scott returned a season best 5 for 9 in 7 overs as Egremont took their second win of the season.

In the final game, home side Dalton facing struggling Wigton as the visitors made heavy weather as they struggled to 118 all out with only John Reed with 24 showing any resistance.

For Dalton, professional Dilshan took 3 wickets for 12 runs ably assisted by 2 wickets each for Jones and Hunter.

In reply, the home side laboured early doors until pro Dilshan hit 54 but with him removed, bowled by Reed, the remaining batsmen struggled as the visitors made light of their recent poor form dismissing the home side for 91 and a welcome 10 points.

Bowling honours were taken by Christopher Hodgson with 4 for 26 and Matthew Hodgson with 3 for 6 in 8.3 overs as the visitors maintained their advantage over Egremont at the foot of the table.

So, the league positions remain the same albeit, Furness and Keswick seemed to make hard work for their wins while Cockermouth had a stroll in sun to keep up recent good form.

Next week sees Furness travelling to Millom, Keswick at home to Dalton with Cockermouth making a tricky visit to Whitehaven.

Cleator are at home to Workington with a real double pointer as bottom side Egremont entertain second bottom side Wigton at Gilfoot Park on the back of vital wins for both sides.

Still all to play for at both ends of the table with all matches scheduled to start at 1pm.
