Several Cumbrians were among almost 480 people arrested during a Palestine protest in London over the weekend.
The Metropolitan Police said in total, 466 protesters were arrested for supporting the group, five for assaults on police officers, two for public order offences, and one for a racially aggravated offence.
Palestine Action became a proscribed terrorist organisation on July 5 and the women were arrested under the Terrorism Act.
At least six Cumbrians defied the ban on Palestine Action on Saturday by holding placards saying ‘I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action’.
Among those arrested and released were Charles Allison, a retired solicitor from Sedbergh, Gwen Harrison, 47, of Kendal and Clare Rodger, 20, a student from Cockermouth.
Mr Allison said: “I took part in this silent and peaceful act of resistance because I can’t stand by and allow our government to tear apart our hard-won rights to peaceful protest.”
It was the biggest protest since the government proscribed the group in July under the Terrorism Act of 2000, making membership of or support for it a criminal offence, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
