Whitehaven’s historic harbour will burst into life this summer as Harbour Fest returns later this month.

Held on Saturday August 30, it had been organised by Rosehill, in partnership with Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners.

The free one-day festival will see the waterfront transformed into a stage for world-class performance, music, and creative family activities.

This year, the festival line-up includes the Cumbrian premiere of NoFit State Circus’ Bamboo, a new show packed full of high-impact acrobatics, live music, and breathtaking displays of balance.

People can also expect a day full of roaming performances, interactive art installations, and even a couple of giant puppets.

Whitehaven’s maritime spirit will be celebrated through the harmonies of the Solway Shanty Crew, while Soundwave’s Hub stage will have an all-day line-up of Cumbrian talent, including a specially formed brass band.

As well as performances and installations, the festival offers many ways to get involved.

Visitors of all ages can explore their creativity, enjoy pavement art sessions, discover the town’s textile heritage with Handpicked Production’s Sekers Objects exhibition, dive into hands-on play or join a spontaneous, playful workshop.

Local makers will also be showcasing their work at the TEG retail market on King Street, beside an exhibition of community artwork adorning the shop fronts, giving visitors and locals alike a chance to explore the town centre.

Jen Garrick, CEO of Rosehill, said: “We’re thrilled to bring some truly world-class performers to the Harbourside this year, alongside the incredible talent that’s grown right here in Cumbria.

“With over 80% of the acts, artists, and performers either hailing from or based in the county, it’s a real celebration of the creativity and skill within our own communities.

“We’ve worked with Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, and so many other brilliant cultural organisations from across Cumbria, to make sure there’s something for everyone, in what’s set to be a brilliant free fun day out for all the family.

“Harbour Fest is about bringing people together, ensuring that great arts and culture can be found right here in West Cumbria, and showcasing the vibrancy of Whitehaven as the streets come alive with entertainment, laughter, and unforgettable experiences.”

Deanne Shallcross, chief executive of Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, said: “We’re excited to be working with the Rosehill team once again to present the fourth annual Harbour Fest.

“This event always brings an incredible buzz to our historic harbour, along with thousands of supporters of all ages, not to mention a varied programme of free entertainment, with something for everyone. We can’t wait to hear all the excited chatter again and see lots of happy faces!”

The Beacon Museum will also be offering free entry between 10am and 11am, a continental market will be open on Millennium Parade, and The Rum Story will host Harbour Fest After Hours – The Mystery of the Pirate Lagoon from Cumbrian theatre company Ragged Edge Productions.

The fun starts at 11am.
