A donkey who arrived at a Cumbrian sanctuary almost unable to walk has made a spectacular recovery – and you can meet her at Shap Farmers Market this weekend.
Hazel arrived at Barnhill Donkeys Retreat, near Shap, in May.
When she was brought into the retreat, she was crippled.
Her previous owner had trimmed her feet themselves. They trimmed her toes so short she was in agony and could barely walk.
The first video, showing Hazel and her foal, was taken by one of the vets from Penrith’s Frame Swift and Partners the day she arrived.
Now, following two months of tender loving care, her recovery has been quite spectacular.
The second video was taking by vet Abi Wolfe, of Frame Swift and Partners.
The sanctuary said: “To be able to keep taking in donkeys and putting them back on their feet, to pay vet, farrier and specific feeds is expensive, which is why we need to keep raising funds to be able to continue our work with these amazing animals.”
The sanctuary is open Monday to Friday 10am to noon.
Barnhill Donkeys Retreat will be at Shap Farmers market on Saturday August 23.
Hazel will be there along with another donkey, so you will be able to come and meet her, and see how well she now is.
Barnhill will also have a stall there selling unique and unusual donkey items and gifts.
