
The new season in the Cumberland County League kicked off with a full programme of matches.
In the Premier Division Unison Athletic opened with an emphatic 9-0 win against Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves.
Mikey Williamson led the way with five goals and he was joined on the scoresheet by Shane Dosward, Oli Reay, Ryan Swales and former Man City youth team player Kingsley Grandison.
By contrast it was all square at Keswick where a second half equaliser by Ian Johnston earned Wigton Harriers a point from a 1-1 draw.
Kieran Spray had put Keswick ahead before half-time.
Reigning champions Maryport Athletic started with a 4-0 win at Workington Juniors.
Ciaran Booty, Aaron Hoad-Williams, Logan Bosward and Ellis Short were all on target.
There was a good contest at Whitehaven Miners Social where the home side edged out Cockermouth 2-1 after it had been all square 1-1 at half-time.
Bradley O’Pray and Ben Graham scored for the Miners with Luke Graham netting for the visitors.
In the other Premier Division game Mirehouse hosted Aspatria and came out on top 2-0 with goals from Callum Wilson and Kyran Smith.
In Division One Dearham United started with a 5-0 win at Carlisle City Development.
Alfie Green, Aaron Lister, Brandon Brown, Louie Kirkbride and Taylor Manchester scored the goals.
Another Development side – for Whitehaven Miners – gave a good account of themselves at Northbank before going down 3-1.
Rhys Broatch scored for the visitors but the hosts took the points with goals from Sam Rae, Olly Woodruff and one by an opponent.
The third Development side, representing Unisun Athletic also put up a strong showing at Silloth but lost 3-2.
Declan Moore and Billy Buxton found the target but Silloth claimed the points with successful strikes by Jackson Slack, Flynn Charters and Sam Edgar.
Finally, on opening day, Whitehaven reserves and Cockermouth reserves fought out a 0-0 draw.
